The Sandpoint City Council tonight approved moving forward with pursuing acquisition of the historic Sandpoint Train Depot. All present Council members were in favor of the motion put forward by Carrie Logan.

Thanks to everyone for writing letters, they were very powerful and helped this cause tremendously by producing a unanimous vote of approval from the Sandpoint City Council.

Post updated with the complete motion that Carrie Logan presented. To follow is that motion in bold:

The easiest way to guarantee that railroad passenger service to Sandpoint no longer exists is to do nothing.

The easiest way to guarantee that the historic railroad depot no longer exists is to do nothing.

The best way to guarantee that railroad passenger service to Sandpoint continues is to begin negotiations immediately with Amtrak.

The best way to guarantee that the historic railroad depot continues to exist and is restored is to begin negotiations immediately with BNSF.

To those ends I make the following motion:

  • The City of Sandpoint begin negotiations with Amtrak to secure a commitment to continue to use the Depot as a passenger station and maintain and operate it as such AND
  • A negotiating team comprised of a representative of the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), John Reuter, Chair of the Public Works committee, Carrie Logan, council liaison to the HPC and Kody Van Dyk, Public Works Director with Melissa Bethel as staff support be empowered to initiate negotiations with BNSF and Amtrak as soon as possible with the negotiating committee to make monthly updates to the City Council on their progress in achieving the goals stated in a. and b. of this motion.
