Depot “Soft” Opening Tonight – May 1, 2015

The Sandpoint Depot will open its doors to train passengers for the first time in 6 years. Thanks to all who were involved in the effort to save the special piece of Sandpoint History.

Sandpoint Depot - Renovated and Opening

The station has been closed to passengers since ceiling tiles began failing a couple years ago deeming it unsafe to occupy (the train still stopped, just no shelter) and more recently due to the construction.  The work on the station is done, and today (May 1), according to the recent article in the Reader, will be the first day it will be open for Amtrak patrons entraining or detraining to/from the westbound Empire Builder, due at 1149 PM (it will likely be late, arriving early May 2).

New Waiting Room Interior

The first eastbound Empire Builder stop at the restored station is scheduled at 235 AM May 2, 44 years to the day that the first regularly scheduled Empire Builder stopped at this ex-NP station in Sandpoint as this was the first eastbound Amtrak Empire Builder to operate following the start of Amtrak on May 1, 1971 (and before then, the Empire Builder passed through – but did not always stop – on the Great Northern main line).
