Comment on Traveling by Train to/from Sandpoint Idaho

I recently received an email from Bruce Millard a local architect about his experience traveling by train. With permission, I am posting his comments here in hopes of continuing discussion about train travel to/from Sandpoint Idaho. If you would like to share your thoughts and experiences, please drop me an email and I will consider adding your thoughts here as well. Enjoy!

Sandpoint Idaho Depot Troop Train“Thanks for the great web article on your trip to Seattle. In the last 8 year I have taken the train to Seattle and Portland from Sandpoint over 15 times, each a great experience. I find the Portland ride much more relaxing, since 1/2 the trip is along the Columbia River, and in the longer daylight months, the river part of the trip is in daylight going west and mostly daylight going east.

Another great short trip is taking the train from Sandpoint to Glacier National Park. I have done this with friends to cross country ski in the winter, it is a great trip to promote our train service. But the best trips by far are my trips to Boston to see the grand kids during Thanksgiving. The sleeping rooms west of Chicago are far nicer, and you get the better views with the 2 levels trains, but unlike you I love the upper Roomettes.

So, thanks for your input on this and your work to keep our historic train station in Sandpoint. With your work, hopefully locals will understand how great it is to have Amtrak in our town. Being a transplant from Philadelphia, I grew up on daily train commuting and train trips up and down the east coast. When I visit east now, I am always on a train run by Amtrak, New Jersey Transit or Septa.

Also, due to other commitments on May 7th, I will not be able to make the National Train Day presentations, but it looks great, and good luck with the event. Keep up the great work, I support your effort strongly. We must keep and restore this great station in Sandpoint and hopefully someday we will again be able to take the train to southern Montana!”
