	<description>This 1916 Gothic-style station in Sandpoint, Idaho is the oldest remaining active passenger depot of the former Northern Pacific railway. The building is closed to the public and used by Amtrak as a platform stop only. There is a outside covered waiting area at the south end of the depot, but the future of the station and Amtrak stop is currently uncertain.</description>

		<description>There are people in many places watching the progress you are making.  Thousands of these old train depots are being torn down/not renovated.  The history of our cities is fading fast.  How will our young people ever understand their roots?

Speaking of young people, how about getting the high school students involved in this?  Students love a good cause and this is their town.  It would make a great research oriented history project. For instance, who were some of the famous people who stepped  off the train in Sandpoint?  They can also generate much publicity and good will (and if done right, some nice revenue).  As the leaders of tomorrow, this is a perfect place for them to continue on the path for being concerned and active citizens.</description>

I implore you to save this historic landmark.  It can become part of a hub of tourist monies for Sandpoint.  Train travel is being reintegrated into many U.S. cities and the more interesting the destinations, the more tourists trains will bring in.  With so much traffic soon to bypass Sandpoint, the community needs all the attractions possible to maintain the economy.  As with so many other communities, as soon as the traffic and the history of the town are gone, the town goes too.  And, Schweitzer is not going to add  much to the town as the mountain community grows. SAVE THIS IMPORTANT SANDPOINT LANDMARK -- once it is gone, it will be replaced my another set of condos or some such.</description>

Without its historic memory (buildings) a city becomes just another sprawling megapolis.  Once you loose it, you can&#039;t get it back.  How many towns in the west regret their decisions for destruction of their history?  Try Nampa and the long gone Dewey Palace.  How different Nampa would be now.  Don&#039;t let this happen to Sandpoint.</description>

Its amazing.  Even from California its apparent that the Mayor of Sandpoint is clueless about the value and importance of restoring and preserving this depot especially at no cost to the city.  It appears she would prefer  nondescript station somewhere out of town.</description>

I don´t agree that Amtrak must purchase new rolling stock for the service, they must purchase NEW for the CURRENT services AND put the older rolling stock on new lines, to reduce the cost to start them.  There are diesel locomotives in storage (modern ones), so I don´t know if Amtrak really needs more of them.  About the stations:  put more, study the locations AND instead of charge the train with the station costs (not their operation, the building costs) put the communities along the line to help with at least part of the money.</description>
